Domains

Domains

Domains lists every name the business holds. It shows when each one lapses, what it costs a year to keep, which account carries it, and who may see and change it. It reminds people before a name expires, and can list a name for sale.

In the sidebar under Domains & network → Domains. Needs: Projects, Services.

MaxSuite does not buy or register domain names. You buy a name at your registrar. It then arrives here through that registrar's account, or you add it by hand.

The Domains screen

One line per name. A name held in several accounts, such as a registrar, Cloudflare and a mail host, shows as one line; press ▸ beside it to see each account's listing underneath. Two tabs:

  • Active: names that have not lapsed, and names with no expiry date yet.
  • Expired: names whose expiry date has passed. Many can still be renewed for a while after it.

A search box filters by name. Each listing shows:

  • Domain and Your role: Viewer, DNS editor, Manager or Owner.
  • Account: the connected account that carries it and its registrar, or "by hand".
  • Expires: how far away the expiry date is. It turns to a warning inside 45 days.
  • Date from: where the date came from, or why there is none, such as confirmed, no lookup, not found, lookup failed, auto-renew grace, deleted, restorable, restore pending, being deleted or registered again.
  • Renewal/yr: the yearly renewal price, if recorded.
  • NS: whether the nameservers point at its zone. zone only means the zone exists but the registrar was not changed. pushed means the change was sent. live means the nameservers were read back and agree.
  • Reminders: on or muted, and Tags.

Above the list are totals: Listings, Names, No expiry date, Renewals a year (per currency) and For sale.

Each listing has DNS (opens its records in DNS), Sharing, Map (opens it on the Infrastructure map) and Mute. On a name held in several accounts these are on the listings under it.

On a project's page, a domain also shows as one line that opens to its listings.

Where names come from

  • Registrar and zone accounts. Connect an account under Integrations (provider accounts), for example GoDaddy, Namecheap, Spaceship, Porkbun, Hostinger, OVHcloud, WebNIC, AWS or Cloudflare. Press Fetch domains to bring in what they hold; the nightly sync does it too.
  • Private accounts. An account connected as Only me keeps its names private: only its owner, the people it is shared with, and administrators see them.
  • By hand. Use Add domain for a name no connected account covers.

Add a domain by hand

  1. Click Add domain.
  2. Enter the Domain, its Registrar, when it Expires, and Notes.
  3. Save.

A name that something already answers on is refused. Claiming one of those and pointing it at a new machine is a mistake no backup undoes.

Fetch names from connected accounts

Click Fetch domains. Every connected account that carries names is asked what it holds now. A date you typed is replaced only by a later one from the registrar, which means a renewal.

Share a domain with someone

  1. Click Sharing on the listing.
  2. Pick a person, a team or everyone, and a role:
    • Viewer sees the name, including what it costs and what it is offered for.
    • DNS editor also adds, changes and removes DNS records. This can be limited to some record types, or to one name and those beneath it.
    • Manager also sets nameservers, renewal, reminders, tags, notes and its project.
    • Owner also shares it and removes it.
  3. Optionally give an end date, then save.

Only an Owner shares, and never above their own role. Three days before a share ends, the holder and the owners are told.

Know when names expire

Every name with reminders on is reminded about 30, 14, 7 and 1 days before it expires, unless its days are changed. Each reminder goes once per expiry date to the workspace's administrators, in the app and on every channel each has set up. A missed morning is caught up, up to three days late.

  • Mute turns a name's reminders off or back on.
  • Warn about what is due tells the administrators now about everything lapsing in the next 30 days.

A date typed by hand comes first, then the registrar's, then a public registry lookup. A typed date gives way when a later one is reported.

Prices

Most registrars do not report prices, so you type them. An agent can set one yearly price for every name under an ending (for example every .com at one registrar) in one go, and list the names still without a price.

List a domain for sale

An agent or the API sets an asking price and a headline, or takes the name off the market. A page on the domain then shows the price with a form for offers. Offers arrive as notifications to the domain's members, or to the administrators. Offers are rate-limited.

Attach a domain to a project

Edit the domain and set its project. Everyone in the project can then see it, and per-project cost counts it.

Who can do what

PermissionLabelLets you
domains:readView domainsOpen the page. Gives Viewer on names nobody personally owns
domains:writeManage domainsAdd names, fetch from accounts, mute and warn. Gives Owner on names nobody personally owns

What you may do with one name is your highest role on it: administrators are Owner everywhere; the owner of the carrying account is Owner; a share on the account or the name gives its role; project members are Viewer. Workspace permissions give nothing on a name in someone's private account. See Sharing and visibility.

Needs

What agents can do

Reads run straight away. Other tools ask a person first unless a standing rule allows them. domains.logCost books money, so it always asks and no rule can allow it. See Agents and approvals.

The portfolio

  • Read-only: domains.list, domains.groups (one entry per name), domains.tags, domains.unassigned (names on no project, with a suggested project), domains.activity, domains.preflight (what a name already is before claiming it).
  • Asks first: domains.add, domains.update (including its project), domains.tag, domains.remove (one listing only).

Expiry and reminders

  • Read-only: domains.expiring, domains.expiryReport (names with no date and why), domains.renewalCalendar (domains and services together), domains.recheck (asks the registry again now and records the date).
  • Asks first: domains.setExpiry, domains.recordExpiryLookup, domains.setReminders, domains.testReminder (sends to you only), domains.warnDue, domains.runReminders (never sends twice).

Costs and sale

  • Read-only: domains.costs, domains.unpriced (names with no price, grouped by registrar and ending), domains.forSale.
  • Asks first: domains.setCost, domains.priceMany (one price for a whole ending; has a dry run), domains.setForSale.
  • Always asks (spend): domains.logCost books a domain cost in the books.

Sharing

  • Read-only: domains.shares, domains.members.
  • Asks first: domains.share, domains.unshare, domains.addMember, domains.removeMember.

Nameservers and zones

  • Asks first: domains.setDns (records where DNS lives), domains.linkZone (links a name to its Cloudflare zone), domains.confirmDns (reads nameservers back; the only thing that sets NS to live), domains.setNameservers (changes them at the registrar; needs Manager).

Over MCP the same tools are named domains__list and so on. See API keys and MCP access.
