Appearance and themes

Appearance and themes

The Appearance screen decides how MaxSuite looks. It holds three separate decisions: your own theme, the organisation's default theme and colours, and which themes the deployment offers at all. Open it from the account menu (your initials, top right) → Appearance.

Your own choice needs no permission. Changing the organisation's look needs tenant:manage. Installing and switching themes on or off needs themes:manage and is for platform administrators.

What you see

From top to bottom:

  1. Your theme: a picker with the installed themes and Built-in appearance, and, for a theme that has both, auto, light and dark. Its description shows under it.
  2. The organisation's theme (with tenant:manage): what everybody here sees until they pick their own.
  3. The organisation's colours and spacing (everyone can see them; only tenant:manage can change them): values grouped as Brand, Ground and ink, Meaning, Shape, Type and Rhythm.
  4. Installed themes (with themes:manage): the themes this deployment has, with upload, switch on and off, make default and remove.
  5. What this changes: a reminder that these values restyle every screen, including those added by modules.

What you can do

Pick your own theme

  1. Choose a theme in the picker, or Built-in appearance for none.
  2. If the theme offers both, choose auto (follow your device), light or dark.

It applies at once, everywhere, and is saved to your account, so it follows you to other browsers. The search box (⌘K) also offers switching to light or dark mode.

The themes shipped with MaxSuite are Cobalt, Glazzed, Graphite, Midnight, Paper, Phosphor, Sage, Slate and Vision. A deployment may have switched some off or added its own.

The Graphite theme

Graphite is neutral greys with no colour accent: near-black in the dark, soft grey in the light, Geist type and round 12px corners. It has both light and dark. A new theme arrives switched off. A platform administrator switches it on under Installed themes before anyone can pick it.

Set the organisation's theme

  1. Under The organisation's theme, choose one. Leaving it empty means the deployment's default.
  2. It saves at once.

Everyone's own choice still wins.

Change the organisation's colours

  1. Edit any value, for example --accent under Brand for the main colour. Colour fields have a colour picker.
  2. The page previews your change straight away.
  3. Press Save. Discard changes throws away what you have not saved. Reset clears every value back to the theme's own. The ↺ beside one value makes it inherit again.

Leave a field empty to inherit it from whatever theme each person uses. Values must be a real colour, length, shadow or font list; anything else is refused.

Install a theme

  1. Under Installed themes, choose a zip file holding theme.json and theme.css.
  2. It is checked. A theme may set the appearance values and nothing else.
  3. Use Switch on or Switch off, Make default (what new accounts and the sign-in page see), and Remove for an uploaded theme. Shipped themes can be switched off, not removed.
